Intuit announces departure from 3-year software lifecycle for QuickBooks Desktop 2024

QuickBooks Desktop users have a notable lifecycle update from Intuit—but it’s one that deserves a little context.

Historically, QuickBooks Desktop users have been accustomed to migrating to a newer version every three years in order to maintain access to supported services and updates. With the announcement some time ago that version 2024 would be the final version of QuickBooks Desktop, some users may have surmised that Intuit would sunset support for QuickBooks Desktop in May 2027.

However, as of August 15, Intuit has stated that for QuickBooks Desktop 2024 Pro Plus, Premier Plus, and Enterprise Solutions, they are moving away from the three-year lifecycle and the products will l not be discontinued in May 2027. Instead, improvements to version 2024 will continue to be delivered through periodic in-product updates. Users should accept those updates when prompted to remain current on available features, security patches, tax compliance updates, and other enhancements.

What Changes for QuickBooks Desktop 2024 Users?

This isn't exactly new information, as Intuit announced some time ago that 2024 would be the last version of QuickBooks Desktop. But the announcement does clarify Intuit's current position:

QuickBooks Desktop 2024 (including Pro Plus, Premier Plus, and Enterprise Solutions) won't be discontinued in May 2027.

  • We're moving away from our historical 3-year software lifecycle.

  • Moving forward, version 24.0 will get continuous support and product maintenance.

  • Intuit is fully committed to maintaining this version with ongoing security patches, tax compliance updates, and other enhancements for years to come.

The important distinction is that this is Intuit’s stated position today. It should not be interpreted as a guarantee that QuickBooks Desktop will remain unchanged or available indefinitely.

What Should Desktop Users Do Now?

For existing Desktop users, this is a good opportunity to evaluate your accounting technology and develop a thoughtful plan for the next couple of years. That does not necessarily mean making an immediate change. It means understanding your requirements, integrations, workflows, reporting needs, and potential migration options before a future change becomes urgent. As always, we are ready to assist you in decision-making, purchasing, and migration. And if you’re still in version 23 or earlier, it’s time to migrate to version 2024. Contact us for support.

For businesses implementing a new accounting system today, our general recommendation is to begin with an appropriate cloud-based solution rather than starting a new QuickBooks Desktop environment. We can help you get started with a clean, well-organized QuickBooks file and train your team on your new accounting system.

The Bottom Line

For now, QuickBooks Desktop 2024 users have some additional clarity: the old three-year lifecycle and concerns about a May 2027 discontinuation do not apply to version 24.0 based on Intuit’s current guidance. If you use QuickBooks Desktop and would like help evaluating what this announcement means for your business, Account Ability Consulting can help you review your current setup and develop a practical technology roadmap for what comes next.
